This one supersedes the first in every way because we really delve into the world at go and it’s just action all the way really.

The writing is better and although there’s a few slower parts, it felt required for what was happening- albeit maybe some of the repeated things that Aaron said didn’t need to be written so many times.

The time travel was more fun and constant through the story and I really enjoyed how the story just continues from where the first book left off.

Didn’t expect that sort of twist and I do feel how the King was beaten was a little ridiculous considering how powerful he was suppose to be.

Never a Hero is the second book in Vanessa Lens first trilogy. This review does contain spoilers for book one, so I would recommend reading that first. I found this book a major improvement over book 1. The worst part was not enough Aaron (and too much Nick)

Plot - it takes place a few months after the first novel, where Joan reversed Nick’s past and her family returned. She meets Nick again (he’s kinda ordinary), only in this timeline, she is the only one who remembered the old timeline (and to some extent the Lius). Joan is eventually tracked down by the Monster Court, only she accidentally reveals monsters to Nick and they go on the run together (nooooooooooo). Also, the person tracking her down is Aaron 😮😨😱

Characters:

Joan Chang-Hunt - she is a lot better in this book (except for her choice in men 😒) but does make some questionable decisions. Her knowing more about monsters in this book was interesting

Aaron Oliver - he is trying to hunt Joan down for the monster court, and also gets a sad backstory reveal

Nick Ward - yes, he’s back. somehow he got worse, had more page time than Aaron 😭pls die for real. He is such a hypocrite

This book was a large improvement over the first book. I would recommend it to young adult fantasy readers, who enjoy a fantasy setting. Good book for people who always wanted to time travel. I thought that the ending of this book really tied it together, and made this and the previous book worth a read.
