"Overcome anger by peacefulness: overcome evil by good. Overcome the mean by generosity; and the man who lies by truth." Many of the teachings in this book will be familiar to people from other religious traditions. If you're in the right frame of mind (and just read a few pages at a time) it can be a very inspiring read. It can be frustrating otherwise. At times I found myself wondering if the whole book boils down to, "Do good stuff. Don't be bad. It is so good to do good stuff, unlike how bad it is to do stuff. You will be so glad you did good stuff, but the bad will not be glad." Still there was plenty here to appreciate, even if it wasn't revealing some new truth.

ESSENTIAL. Should be left on your nightstand so you can pour over random passages before bed, and in the morning. Should be left in hotel room drawers across the world.

Impossible to follow? Maybe. But maybe that's part of the journey.

Again, ESSENTIAL.

for a minute there I thought: wow maybe Buddhism is different from other religions but as the book progressed I got more and more disappointed.
The book can be summarized in three verses but it kept repeating the same idea over and over.
and what's up with the war against desire? why is sex so hated in modern religions?
I thought this one would be peaceful but then it promised the non-believers to feed them balls of melted iron in hell and that was a "HELL NO!" for me.
