This book was great! So sad but also so skilfully written as I absolutely found myself rooting for the main character as they did so many things wrong things.

This book surprised me with how good it was. I think seeing Iskat's waning belief in the jedi is an amazing perspective that really adds to the universe. While we know some of the other inquisitor stories, this book provides so much insight as to how tempting the dark side is and how a young jedi could lose their faith in the order during such a chaotic time period. It really emphasizes the failings of the Jedi Order and how much could slide under their radar. The character development of Iskat is such a joy to experience. The action scenes are thrilling. I would have liked more time with her as an inquisitor, but that's a minor complaint overshadowed by how excellent this book was. A perfect addition to the canon Star Wars novel collection.

This book serves primarily as a character study of Iskat Akaris, from the start of The Clone Wars to the early days of the Inquisitors (plus an epilogue). In that it really works, providing us with a three dimensional character and we can see how she's influenced by others, how the Jedi were detrimental to her (although there's definitely hints she's not the most reliable narrator but how differently people can percieve the same events is one of the themes), how she ended up taking the path she did, how it could have gone another way.

There's some interesting new planets added, with two new (as far as I'm aware) Sith worlds. There's a new culture introduced with Iskat's people.
We also find out just how little information the Jedi were given during The Clone Wars, which certainly helps explain why the war went so poorly for them. I did expect there to be more about the Inquisitors, we get a little more information but not much and I'm dissappointed the initiation ceremony got skipped over.

I would have liked more time with her as an inquisitor generally, the main story ends with her first mission. I understand Dawson was constrained with the ending because the ultimate fate of Iskat and Tualon was already written elsewhere but I do think that could have been built up to better. Instead there's a time skip, Iskat is a very different person because dark side corruption and it's all very abrupt. Their ultimate fate was a really interesting, tragic one and I thought this novel missed a chance to make it really have an impact. Tualon and Iskat's relationship just needed more time spent on it.
