I tried reading this book at the beginning of 2021 and after 10 chapters I gave up. I decided to give this book another try this year. I read 1 chapter a day in February as there’s the same number of chapters as days in the month. I did read a couple more one day because the chapters in the middle of the book got really interesting!
LIKES: It’s important to know that the while the plot does advance, this book is a character book. Each chapter you read you begin to understand the cast of characters more. Simon & Binabik, Josua, Elias, Miriamele & Cadrach, Isgrimnur, Maegwin are all explored in a much deeper way. We begin to learn more about Osten Ard itself and its secrets. We meet many new faces both good and evil. I enjoyed reading this book but it is a step below The Dragonbone Chair.
DISLIKES: My only real complaints with this book are the length of the chapters can sometimes be too long, and as we all know Tad Williams can get really long winded and have too much flowery prose. A general complaint I saw online was that some of the characters are very whiny in this book. Remember some characters are teenagers if you’ve ever been around teenagers you know they’re kids trying to grow up into adults. There’s also an uncomfortable scene in a later chapter between a girl and a man. Nothing sexual is written but the girls thoughts and feelings reflect what happened to her.Â
RECOMMEND?
If you read The Dragonbone Chair and enjoyed it then keep going! The events in this book will setup what is to come in the third book, To Green Angel Tower. I haven’t read the third book but I will be doing 1 chapter a day in March & April until I’m done.Â
