it was a good enough read but thats about it. It was more tame for a sci-fi romance and whilst I haven’t read many sci-fi romance books, apart from the defenders background having sci-fi elements it didn’t feel much different from a contemporary romance maybe slightly dark with
the whole cartel kidnapping thing
but idk.

We follow Gracie taking care of The Defender, a very grumpy superhero who crash landed in her garden. Through the course of the book Gracie and her grump build a reluctant but entertaining friendship and companionship, its one of the things I liked in this book seeing them go from not trusting each other to this cute back and forth they had. Alex did and said these little things that would catch me of guard and had me swooning. and the way gracie was damn near oblivious was both hilarious and eventually got frustrating.

that being said what i didn’t like was when they finally became a couple together, i love mz’s slow burns but this was the slow burn of slow burns because they pretty much got together in the final chapter and even that was mainly just a 🔥 scene. a little more time with them as a couple would have bumped this up in my rating

While I enjoyed a lot of moments in this book, I will say it is LONG. This is LENGTHY. It takes like 200 pages to really amp up and by page 300 I was like "where on earth could we possibly be going with this". I had some unanswered questions about the supernatural aspect of this, so I will say that if you're expecting any type of complexity with the fantastical aspect - you're not going to get that (which may or may not be something you like!).

The main character is definitely... unique? She's kind of obnoxious at times with her filter.. or lack thereof, but she grew on me and I learned to enjoy it. The entire
cartel
plotline was kind of unusual, but it's a refreshing plotline compared to other conflicts we've had in Mariana's books.

Spoilers:
I think her being Atraxian was kind of... I don't know... irritating. Like a weird secret chosen one trope but without the chosen part, I don't know how to describe it. Regardless, it wasn't prevalent enough to dissuade my enjoyment.

I've read 7 of her other works, and this one is definitely her most unique premise. It's so unlike the others and really was a fun breath of fresh air even though I absolutely LOVE everything I've read so far (except for one). Super fun (pun intended) and I really enjoyed the banter between the fmc and mmc.

It was just REALLY long, but I recommend it otherwise.

First MZ
Loved it.
So cute. Was originally a little frustrated with how 'The Grump' received his powers but overall pretty great.
