one of my cousin’s favorites!
•it could’ve used less misogyny in the way things were framed & overlooked (even with generous leeway for consideration of the time period and what might’ve been the main character’s honest point of view)
•I really appreciated that it didn’t shy away from the queerness of the story, and watching their love for each other evolve as they grew up was really beautiful
•the ending made my cry a little just like my cousin said it would (albeit only after all the death, at
Spoilerthe mother’s slow acceptance of her son’s chosen partner and eventual willingness to add his name on the grave).

Though I started reading this book already knowing some of Achilles’s story, and therefore some of the events that would happen, I never once felt like that detracted from my experience reading it. If anything, it added to it. I was in stitches trying to figure out how certain events would happen. I absolutely loved this book, and finished it in a single sitting.

Miller did a fantastic job of laying the groundwork for the plot early-on. No prior knowledge of Greek mythology is needed to read and fully grasp this book. Foreshadowing was great.
The writing style is excellent. Usually descriptions of the surroundings take me out of the story but the transitions between dialogue and more descriptive writing were seamless. Maybe because this book isn’t dialogue-heavy to begin with.
I found some details to be a bit repetitive but I love how each time Thetis is presented we are provided a new clever metaphor for the sound of her voice. It grounds us in the story and makes everything very visceral without being redundant.
Love the portrayal of a kid crush. That’s the exact fluttery, can’t-tear-my-eyes-away feeling I had in elementary school.
More mentions of rape and misogyny than I’d anticipated. Doesn’t take away from the book but definitely twists my gut uncomfortably when reading about it.
Only reason this isn’t five stars is cause of the time jumps. Each paragraph the: that evening, the next morning, a year later, that spring. It does fit with the storyteller vibe of mythology and the pacing was still great. I’m not even sure there’s a better way to go about it frankly. It just did knock my focus a little bit and my criteria for 5 stars is that there is absolutely nothing I would change.

this is my second madeline miller and i think i would read absolutely anything she writes. just like circe the writing is just so fucking beautiful and she paints pictures with her words and writes emotions so profoundly so beautifully. ALSO the griefff ughh its j so so good. i dont think i will ever get over this book. it was so heartbreaking but just felt so right idk if that makes sense. i think the conversation at the end of the book that briseis had with achilles will always stay in my mind when i think of this book. achilles’ pride cost him what he loved the most. patroclus truly was the best of the myceneans. the only thing i kind of didnt like was the fact that patroclus had sex with the mother of achilles’ son. i thought that was weird and i didn’t understand why he did it.
