After hearing so much about this book, both positive and negative I was a little unsure what to expect when getting into it (Besides the obvious). However overall I enjoyed this more than I expected to, I didn’t love it, but I also didn’t dislike it as much as I though I would as someone who typically only reads stories with happy endings. Some/a lot of parts of this story were definitely questionable to me but I enjoyed reading about the connection Achilles and Patroclus had and also about the journey the two went through together . The beginning of the book was pretty dry and I almost dnf’d so many times but once I got about halfway through I was more invested and curious about how things would play out. I’m conflicted about how I feel about this book as whole tbh.

Spoiler “I thought, This is what Achilles will feel like when he is old. And then I remembered: he will never be old.”

I have never read a love story convey so much closeness. Even the physical gap between their bodies must have been too much distance for them to bear.

The prose reads like poetry. The story was incredibly satisfying and kept my interest. I got teary-eyed a few times. This is a story where two characters dare to love in a world where marrying for love is an outlier.
Spoiler Odysseus was the only other person who was truly in love in this book?
I am at a loss for words for how beautiful this story was. It has renewed my interest in Greek Mythos, which is a tough task.

Spoiler“Patroclus, I have given enough to them. I will not give them this.”

This book surprised me not in how much I enjoyed it, but in what ways that I did. Throughout the day I found myself falling in love with the character of Patroclus. I found him so addicting and following Achilles through his eyes was so intriguing. The ending was predictable but not the details which had me sobbing.
SpoilerWhen we are hearing Patroclus narrate Achilles actions after his death and then finally Patroclus yearning for his final resting with him, that part broke me dude.

Overall this book was so sad and yet so beautiful.❤️

Very emotional. Really enjoyable straightforward yet descriptive writing style. Not only does it cover mythological content, it also has a feel of a myth with it's hard-learned lessons. Characters are interesting and well described but feel like they serve to push the plot forward more than be themselves, but I also think this more static character development is what this story requires. Even so, I felt emotionally invested in the characters due to the playful written descriptions of romance.
