Wow! This, the second in the series, is somehow, unbelievably, even better than the first. Beautiful, heart-wrenching, hopeful, and though the word doesn't fit, given the story itself, ever so human in scale. A deep poetic novel that explores layer after layer of identity, self, and how we make ourselves at home in our bodies.

YES! Becky Chambers had me bawling my eyes out in the final chapters, but she still delivered a joyous and hopeful ending that wasn't tied up too neatly to feel unrealistic.

The only thing keeping this from 5 stars are the explicit dog deaths. Totally necessary for the book but I struggle with any on screen animal deaths

I will officially read anything by Becky Chambers. Sidra grew so much and I really did love her at the end (which I didn’t expect to). But Pepper has my entire heart. Her chapters tore me open and mended me whole again.

I wanna play Big Bug Crew too.💔

A departure from the first book in form and style, but just a phenomenal. Chambers is amazing at analyzing the human condition through the lens of her characters and this novel is no different. A simple plot overall allows for a detailed exploration of what it means to be sentient and how learning autonomy changes a person for the better.

While I was disappointed at first not to return to the crew of the Wayfarer, it didn't last long. I greatly enjoyed getting to know Lovelace as she settles into her new life outside of a ship framework, and enjoyed exploring the troubling survival story of a small girl created for one purpose until accidentally unmoored from it. I adored the ending as well.

I loved the duo storyline of this one. Seeing why Pepper is who she is and also Sidra coming into her own were two very special stories. Freaking emotional throughout, though.
