A departure from the first book in form and style, but just a phenomenal. Chambers is amazing at analyzing the human condition through the lens of her characters and this novel is no different. A simple plot overall allows for a detailed exploration of what it means to be sentient and how learning autonomy changes a person for the better.

The plot switches back and forth between Pepper's past and present, when she is guided by and guides two different "artificial" people. These two timelines collide at the end. All of the characters have been through. A lot. This book handles their stories with respect and care. This is a beautiful exploration of the meanings of family and care. Their world is unjust, so they steal a little justice for themselves.

A beautiful follow up to the first book in the series and a lovely expansion of an already engaging world.

I loved the duo storyline of this one. Seeing why Pepper is who she is and also Sidra coming into her own were two very special stories. Freaking emotional throughout, though.

Sci-Fi, Found Family

“All the things made better for some people. Nobody has ever figured out how to make things better for everybody.“

“I love it dearly. But it will never feel the same as it did when I was a kid. I’m different now. And different is good, but it cuts both ways.“

“Every organic sapient I’ve ever talked to, every book I’ve read, every piece of art I’ve studied. You are all desperate for purpose, even though you don’t have one.”

“I haven’t found a purpose like that yet–nothing so overarching and big. But I don’t think purposes have to be immutable.”
