En bog hvor utrolige mængder viden er komprimeret så det fylder 'meget lidt'. Det er en bog man kan læse flere gange da man bestemt ikke kan suge det hele til sig af en gang.
Bogen giver et godt og anderledes indblik i de sidste 2000 års historie, særligt med fokus på handel og ekspansion. De sidste kapitler i bogen er særligt værdigfulde til at beskrive moderne historie da de giver et klart blik i Europas indblanding i den nuværende situation i mellemøsten og Asien, hvilket man ikke for andre steder.

The Silk Roads is one of those special types of books where you have to stop from time to time and savour what you’ve just read. Beyond that, as a book on history it piques your interest so much on certain topics that I found myself constantly checking the footnotes and saving books on specific moments of history to read later.

Peter Frankopan’s acclaimed best seller reminded me why I loved studying history so much at school. A seamlessly written piece on history through time that uses the the Silk Roads as it’s centrepiece. Beyond what the Western world about the passage of history through Europe, this enlightens the reader to the glories of the Persian empire and other great civilisations only briefly glossed over. Who knew a dense book on history could be so compelling. In a tantalising narrative structure, each chapter follows clearly and memorably from one to the next.

I was never a great fan of essays trying to condense a world history into the limited space of one publication. I am also not a fan of essays that draw a line from the dawn of time until the present day, as by definition the present day is constantly changing and sometimes, like these past few years painfully showed, it does so in a turbulent, unpredictable way. That said, while I am in awe of how skillfully the author managed to keep together sources covering millennia, in more than one occasion bringing the reader's back to the main topic of the silk roads was forcefully, and not successfully done. In short, there is too much in here that is not connected, the focus is not always spot-on and the chapters focussing on this century perhaps should be taken out.

Čekal jsem dobrou knihu o historii hedvábné stezky. Skutečný rozsah a obsah mne ve výsledku zaskočil, ale rozhodně ne negativně! The Silk Roads zatím směřuje do mých top 3 knih pro letošní rok.
Kniha je nesmírně dlouhá a dala by se v podstatě rozdělit na 3 části:
1. Starověký vývoj blízkého východu, vznik islámu a střety náboženství a kultur.
2. Nástup imperií - od křižáckých států, přes Mongoly, Španělsko až po Britské impérium.
3. Posledních 150 let vztahů východu a západu.
To nejobjevnější pro mne představovala druhá a hlavně třetí část. Autor má, jak jsem to už několikrát u Britů pozoroval, velmi střízlivý přístup k jednání impéria v koloniích a vměšování do politické situace nezávislých států. Nevím, do jaké míry je vše opravdu tak, jak to autor popisuje (i když ty stovky stránek referencí jsou docela impozantní), ale ten kontext, který dodává k vývoji 20. století na blízkém východě mi přišel velmi objasňující. A to i ve světle současného vývoje vztahů mezi Evropou a USA, viz např. tahle pasáž z doslovu:
In practice, (...) this means nothing less than the complete reorientation of the United States. ‘We will of necessity’, it explained, ‘rebalance towards the Asia-Pacific region.’ Despite budget cuts of $500 billion to defence spending already planned over the next decade and with further reductions likely, President Obama took pains to stress that these ‘will not come at the expense of this critical [Asia-Pacific] region’. If one may brutally paraphrase the report, for a hundred years the US has directed much of its attention to its special relationships with countries in western Europe; it is now time to look elsewhere.
Celkově pro mne byla kniha velmi zajímavým pohledem na to, jak státy fungují - myslím, že si docela dobře pamatuji druhou válku v Perském zálivu a Afghánistán nebo spory mezi USA a Íránem. Ale spousta věcí okolo mi při vstřebávání informací z médií zcela unikla - např. že Američané dodávali v 70. letech jaderné technologie Íránu (dokud to byl jejich spojenec). Nebo to, jak bezohledně a sebevědomě se západní představitelé chovali a ztratili tím veškerou důvěru místních obyvatel, na které brali ohledy jen verbálně pro média. Ale i starší události - třeba to, že bohatství italských měst ve středověku bylo z velké části budováno nejprve obchodem s otroky a později vysáváním křižáckých států...
Řekl bych, že kniha je napsaná velmi pěknou angličtinou, nabitá informacemi, ale také dost masivní - četl jsem ji přes měsíc a místy dost intenzivně. Jen už toho na mne místy bylo moc a musel jsem si dát na pár dní pauzu. Výpisků mám hrozně moc, zpracovávat to budu asi ještě dlouho :-)
Závěrem rozhodně doporučuji všem, kteří by rádi dostali nějakou perspektivu a trochu širší pohled na geopolitické souvislosti i metody práce. Ve srovnání např. s SPQR, což je také skvělá kniha o historii, nepřináší vhled do každodenního života normálních lidí - nevím nic víc o tom, jaké to bylo žít podél hedvábné stezky. Chápu ale mnohem více, proč tato oblast byla, je a bude důležitá.

Thoroughly enjoyable. The narrator was fantastic, the content was really entertaining and enlightening, and it ended on a really hopeful note. A great story.
