This is a great book with many twists an turns. I kept thinking I knew what was going on, but I didn't quite have it. I think it's pretty impressive, especially for a self published book! The characters had so much life to them, and the author told the story efficiently yet colorfully (no pun intended). This was a quick, heartfelt read that I think you will pass to a friend.

This is a great book. Really makes you look at things from a different point of view. Very quick read too.

Very creative, to say the least! There were some things that I saw coming, even the ending, but there were things that I didn't see coming, even the ending! I'm aware that the previous sentence is a huge oxymoron, but that's the only way my thoughts can be put into writing.

Unfortunately, even today, there are still people who will fight tooth-and-nail against interracial relationships (from basic friendships to marriage) but the world as we know it, wouldn't exist without them.

I am interested in reading more by this author.

Chile... What in the hell did I just read? The
Spoilerfirst
reveal/twist was easy enough to guess, but the book took a gross turn after that. I suppose the author intended to make us wonder about the truth, but to me, the end of the book totally undermines all the character development and makes the last quarter of the book pointless. If you spin us 360°, what's the point?

Ain't No Sunshine wowed me. The story is set in the 60's in Virginia. It is told through the point of view of Stephen, a white male, who falls in love with his neighbor, Ruthie, a black female. Stephen is raised in an abusive home. Ruthie is his only real friend for much of the story. Stephen's abusive father refers to Ruthie as a nigger but yet does not prohibit the friendship and shows an interest in her, ( buying her a dress, paying for art school). Yet when his son shows a romantic interest in Ruthie he is beaten.

This story held my interest to the end. I guessed at somethings by chapter 10 but was still unprepared for the ending. Ain't No Sunshine takes a few twists and turns, some are believable, some not. Overall I found it to be a very good novella.

This book drew me in immediately. The subject matter can be difficult at times and it does contain violence and sex, but it's not overdone (PG13). I thought I had it all figured out, but then there were plot twists that threw me for a loop. Very easy to read and hard to put down. I finished it in a couple of hours.

This book was a freebie that I found on Pixel of Ink. The writing in this book was strong. The POV of the man character was strong and believable. DuBois deftly captures the oppressive feel of an abusive home life. I couldn't put this book down.

Why am I giving it two stars?

Cos the ending creeped me out. It smacked of Flowers in the Attic. So if you love that series you'll eat this up. This is not for me!
