A slow burn that goes too fast
The pacing of the book was kind of weird to me. It has a slow burn element to allow the characters to build up their chemistry and affection but once we hit the moment where they acknowledge their genuine feelings for each other their relationship moves very fast. So much so that I wasn’t really convinced that they really loved each other. It felt like they were saying that at the end because that’s what’s expected in a romance. Idk something went wrong with the pacing and I think that has something to do with the leading tropes in this book. Our MCs meet as strangers and there’s this slight enemies element on Amerie’s end. Then it turns into fake dating which then turns to forced proximity and then their relationship takes off from there. Th book took so much time with the banter and fake dating element but didn’t take enough time to create moments of genuine intimacy and connection between toe characters to convince the readers that these two people are really falling for each other. Everything felt too contrived and convenient. Admittedly this boom has all the tropes I dislike in romance and I dislike them for the very reason that it’s too convenient and even kind of lazy. The characters don’t have to make the decisions they do in fake dating situations so it takes me out of the sort a little. This book has potential. I think if it weren’t written differently it could been four stars. I do think Amerie and Vincent have good chemistry. I just wish it was developed better.

This was such a sweet, swoon-worthy read. My only complaint is that I wanted to see Amerie’s business be successful and it was kind of left up in there after things ended the way that it did (trying not to give spoilers 😅)

I read this book in 1 day! It was really cute and a quick read. I absolutely love black romance but black contemporary romance is even better. It’s so relatable. I can easily fall in love with the characters and the way they carry themselves and behave. Their slang, the chill aspect of it. Also…. A Black Astronaut and a Black Entrepreneur…. Yeah count me in!
Vincent was really sweet. I think portrayed him in good light. He was introverted but didn’t mind saying what was on his mind. Also, I love when a book has fake dating and the characters actually say what they’re feeling. All feelings were mutual and I loved that I wasn’t frustrated by too much miscommunication.
Amerie wasn’t my favorite character but I still connected and enjoyed her sense and humor. I did like that she didn’t take any of the kind deeds as an insult. She was able to be confident in herself and her independence without cutting Vincent down or not letting him be a man.

This book was ok until about 45%. Boooo. I did not feel the chemistry nor the love. But what pissed me off most is the fact that the mcm’s parents planned their anniversary party on the day he launches to space!??! For months!!?? And then guilts him for not being able to come!??! Why the heck would they not be there for his launch. Dumbbbbb. Like the fact that this was the plot point for why they HAD to fake date. Dumbbbb.
Also, when he was like “hey my mom gave me her ring and insists I propose tomorrow! What should I do???”
Um. Don’t? Say thanks but no.
Book peeeeved me.

Library loan is about to expire and not into it enough to return to it later. Just kind of bored.
