This was a pretty good short story; especially for one of his earlier works. I was confused about the tie-in to the greater Cytoverse as this story started but it quickly became apparent. My main hold-up with this short story is that it didn't really add too much to the plot and the writing style and grimdark-ness (for lack of a better term) didn't really align with the YA whimsy of the main series.

I actually really enjoyed this one. More of an adult novella with ties to the larger Cytoverse and probably better to be read after the first 3 books and 3 novellas in the series to date. Some interesting twists that foreshadow the events to come in the larger series.

Worth reading after Skyward and before Starsight.  I can't claim to have enjoyed it, but it was short and did help me going into the read of Starsight.  I may enjoy it more reading it again later.
