I read this book when I was in high school and let me just say I think I was too young. This is a tough read. Just go ahead and skip chapter 30, trust me, you don’t need to know the grim details. Anyways, Billie Letts has a knack for describing the most random things in such a specific way that it really brings the story to life, but it’s kind of the bad parts so you don’t really want those parts brought to life. Willy Jack was a piece of sh*t, I could not understand why we were still following his story. It all comes together in the end though. She needed to bring us through the hard times to show us that life goes on and there are good things on the other side. I’ve rarely encountered a stronger source of “found family” than this story, it was inspiring. But then an equally strong source of “stranger danger” makes it hard to decide, do you open up to people or not? Sometimes it’s really worth it, sometimes it’s really not. How do you know? Is it worth the risk?
