This is another fun entry in the Hamish Macbeth series. As it starts, Hamish is once again in exile, since the Lochdubh police station has been closed. The locals organize a "crime wave" to force police brass to reinstate him, an effort organized by the wealthy, formidable Maggie Baird.

While Hamish is glad to be back, soon the crime wave becomes all too real as Maggie is murdered in a suspicious car "accident." After her death, Hamish discovers that Maggie Baird was a woman with big appetites...and even bigger secrets. With Maggie's browbeaten niece and a pile of money-hungry suitors around, there are plenty of suspects for Hamish to question. Maggie pushed someone too far; can Hamish figure out who before another murder happens?

One of my favorite of the Hamish Macbeth books. It was funny, endearing and kept me guessing. I adore this series. A great book to end the year on.

Death of a Hussy by M.C.Beaton

I'd read plenty of Agatha Raisin and I thought it was about time I investigate Hamish Macbeth. I'd never seen the TV series so I had no preconceived ideas about what the man would be like, but I was pleasantly surprised. The character of Hamish Macbeth is likeable and you want him to succeed in solving his mysteries. All of the books have the same strong plot that the Agatha Raisin collection has and as always I never work out the ending.

Great Read

This was an enjoyable read. This is the fifth book of the Hamish Macbeth series. In this book, our laid-back police constable, Hamish Macbeth, has to find out who killed the wealthy, but not so nice, Maggie Baird. The list of suspects includes Maggie's clingy niece, Alison Kerr, who is the main recipient of her aunt's wealth, and four former lovers of Maggie. In the case of the four ex-lovers, Maggie was baiting them with money to get a husband. Hamish follows all leads and follows his instincts to find out who murdered Maggie Baird. I thought the idea of having a cozy mystery with a male character was also something different for me. I thought Hamish was a great character. He is mysterious, but I am enjoying his character more in this book. I think his character makes the story fun and exciting. He is described as bumbling, and lazy. However, as I kept reading, I thought he was observant and skilled at his job. I thought this was a great addition to my first cozy mystery with a male main character. The ending was great. I am looking forward to seeing how the series goes. I am excited to read book 6. Death of a Snob, here I come. Overall, a great read.

I would give this 3.5. I have read better Hamish MacBeth stories, but this one was still pretty good. They are great for relaxing and forgetting about having to go to work and process mystery forms all day and the drama.
