I've been in awe of David Mitchell's writing since Ghostwritten was first published. I love how each book is connected. However, occasionally, one of his books could stand on its own and not woven within each of the others. This book was just that book. The addition of the fantastical elements took away from an otherwise superbly written story. For that, a great book become lessor than.

Really enjoyed. Probs a 4.5 and only not a 5 because I loved the Bone Clocks a tiny tiny bit more. Took a bit to get going but once it did it was ace. Loved jaspers story- that’s the one that links through to Mitchell’s other work, and didn’t find the celeb cameos that annoying.

i somehow find myself accidentally reading epics all the time. not sure how that happens. as always, i love a book with a huge ensemble. and fake bands.

i am quite literally speechless. the love utopia avenue had for eachother, and the passion they had for music is just incredible. david mitchell’s writing is so beautiful and it honestly made a fake band come to life, while including real artists such as david bowie, The Who, The Beatles, etc. to truly drive the story. this book truly felt like a transportation into the 60s like nothing ever before. i can’t even describe the way this book made me feel, all i can say is READ IT. also, the way this book is structured is actually genius. each time period has an album, and in each album there are songs each written by a specific band member and each chapter is from a different person’s perspective. did i explain that right idek? anyways. i wasn’t going to rate this 5 stars as the beginning felt kind of long, but it gets so good, and it was completely different from every book ive ever read. the connections you feel with the characters is insane, and their stories are incredibly moving.
