Read a non-fiction book about the case of Chikatilo and this book is not accurate at all, which really bothers me. The 50s were tough times in Russia, but this book overdramatized everything.

This book made me read some related articles about the man-made famine in Ukraine in the 30s(Holodomor), Stalin's atrocities in the grab of 'Greater Good' and the true story of the serial killer Andrei Chikatilo in the 80s.The book is obviously depressing because it is mostly based on true events. It is very violent and revolting. I had to skim over some paragraphs.
The detective story was not compelling. When they were in a State of fear where one is persecuted even for breathing freely, i found Leo's motivation for finding the killer unconvincing. Also, strangers helping him to find the killer?
The ending was too convenient.

If I realized this book was about a serial child killer, I would have skipped it, cause I find that too upsetting. I did end up skipping a few pages about him stalking & killing a child. But mostly it was about a man obsessed with finding him. I enjoyed the look into the Soviet Union and the book is well done. It's suspenseful and an interesting look into a society I don't know much about.
