the twists and turns were twisting and turning
i kept thinking i knew what was going on and then something else would happen
Felicity says “Mostly how depictions of mental illness are used to build suspense by introducing uncertainty and a sense of mistrust, especially with regard to the narrators perception of events, and the conflation of magic and madness in female characters.” and i think that was a very get description of how i was feeling while reading the book. i kept going back and forth on whether or not i thought there was actually magic involved or if ellis was just fucking with her for her book. and then it was so much darker than i thought and even then when i thought i knew what was going on and then it got darker
wild

i had a good time reading it

This was a very weird book. Aside from the general unlikeableness of the characters, the writing was very repetitive at times. Certain phrases would appear multiple times even in the same chapter or on the same page but not in a way that makes it feel like it was intentionally done for emphasis or the like. Just really not my cup of tea :/

Delightfully twisty and saturated with dark academia vibes! The prose had such sensory detail — I could truly feel the crisp snow and the bitter coffee. Felicity is a truly unreliable narrator, sometimes calm & aloof, sometimes plagued by ghosts and creepy happenings, leaving the reader to only guess what is real and what is manipulation… until the moment all is revealed.

Content notes: death, murder, manipulation and emotional abuse, underage use of alcohol/drugs, brief discussions of lesbiphobia, transphobia, & racism.

Very slow beginning, it takes awhile for something interesting to happen. The writing itself was just alright. I liked the mystery/guessing and the characters.

The story kept me hooked almost the whole way through. The setting was stunning, and the plot was of the twist variety -very entertaining even if somewhat guessable- so I thoroughly enjoyed those aspects of the book.
However, there were a couple of random things that confused me (such as Felicity mentioning that she never knew her grandparents when a couple of chapters before she was reminiscing fondly of her grandmother, but maybe that was an error on my part); and some of the book just wasn't to my taste, but, overall, it was an interesting and fun read.
