This was quite an epic story. It spanned a lot of time and there were many, many characters. It was amazing to me how Erdrich was able to develop so many characters. Not only is Erdrich fantastic with characterization, she is a master at bringing a scene to life. She can put me right there in the middle of the action.

There is a mystery, but there are also romances. This is a story of connections and family. I wasn't ready to leave. I want to read it again now that I know how everything fits together.

My rating is between 4 and 5 - 4.5. It's really an excellent story - very complicated. Erdrich weaves the spider webs of history through two communities and several generations. After reading the book, I went back and tried to draw a family tree(s). It looks like a spider web!
The story begins with a murder and a vigilante lynching of innocent Native American men. Turns out, everyone (the victims, the murderer, the vigilantes, and the wrongfully accused) is connected. A very intricate tale of love and loss. I read it twice and look forward to reading it again!
