i picked up this book while i was house-sitting, and i saw it on the shelf. i was looking for a distraction from my dissertation, and thought that i’d give this a go. it’s not my usual read, but i was looking for any excuse to avoid writing. and this book has by far surpassed ALL of my expectations.

a time-travel, body-swapping, murder mystery set in a kind-of-real-but-also-kind-of-fantasy-world, The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle was Murder-of-Roger-Ackroyd level INSANE. it’s easy to read, but will squish your brain into a thousand tiny pieces.

i don’t feel like i can say too much regarding the actual story, as i don’t want to give away anything by mistake. but, i can say that this is one of the most enjoyable, engaging books that i have read in a long time. i read it in less than 24 hours, and i know i’ll read it again.

also, as a neurospicy person, this novel felt *achieveable*. there are, like, 60 chapters, and they don’t feel very long, so every time you finish a chapter you get a little dopamine hit!

Disorienting by design, this book was interesting yet somewhat overwhelming. There are a lot of characters— most unlikeable for their own individual reasons — and they’re hard to keep track of. There’s a tricky time loop. The story isn’t told in a linear narrative structure. There’s deceit and confusion and the narrator is incredibly unreliable. The conclusion is intense but satisfying — it was hard to get there but mostly worth the trek.

The Pros: the writing style is very simple to read, the book is set at an /almost/ dilapidated 1920’s mansion, the murder mystery ground hogs day plot line was incredibly intriguing and kept me going for 75% of the book. I didn’t see the final twist right at the end and it fascinated and annoyed me at the same time.

The Cons: You don’t actually get to solving the mystery and putting in all the pieces together until you’re 75% into the book. It’s too dang long. You get to host 4 or 5 and then flip into someone else on the same day and it just got really old especially when those hosts didn’t find out anything. I predicted one of the plot twists. I felt like the end was rushed and if we didn’t spend so much time stumbling along with a few hosts, it didn’t have to be rushed.
