I had previously read part 1 of Persepolis but hadn't gotten around to reading the second part, so I was happy to read the complete collection all together. I feel like Satrapi accomplishes a great deal in this graphic memoir--it's a coming-of-age story, a country's modern history, an exploration of religious tradition and a desire for individuality. I think I could have benefited from knowing a bit more about the Islamic Revolution in Iran ahead of time because I struggled a bit to keep up with the political goings-on, but I think she did as good a job as she could have of condensing such complex issues into images with little text. Her style is so recognizable and works well with the narrative she's telling.

The man at the comic book shop who sold the book to me described it as ā€œradical daria.ā€ Iā€™d say that sums it up pretty well.

i watched the movie years ago because i saw a screen cap and thought the art was so intriguing and absolutely loved it, when i found out it was a graphic novel i wanted it ever since but it was never available at any libraries thankfully hunter gave me the worlds best christmas gift and viola iā€™ve now read the book. it lived up to the movie and then some, not only is it very timely but also makes so much more sense after investing time into learning about the world outside of america. it would read just as well without the illustrations but they are so well done and powerful AH it just works so well. iā€™m very thankful for this book :0)

I'm so glad I finally got to read this. I watched the movie twice before, and reading this makes me want to watch it again. Marjane Satrapi has so much heart and candor and writes and draws in such a profound way that helps even outsiders understand. She is an international treasure.
