I stumbled on this book accidentally and as you can see it is the cover and the title that drew me in. How can anyone pass a book when it has something to do with dragons? Just over a hundred pages, this makes a very fast read perfect for travels or work nights. I was a bit confused at the beginning as to who will be the love interest. Is it the king or the guard? Or is the guard the real king? Yes, my mind has made up some crazy scenarios. It's nothing as complex as that, you know. Overall, a short, sweet and cosy romance that will be the perfect stress buster.

I probably read more of this very average book then I normally would have only it was sunny outside and I was enjoying the weather so despite the utterly predictable MC's, the utterly predictable side characters and the utterly predictable plot, I read until I was red. Or at least quite pink. The point is, if you find yourself lulled by the sun and high on vitamin D (I'm Canadian okay, we don't get nearly enough!), this will be a pleasant, easy, timewaster of a read. It's worth noting that I finished the last 30% indoors and skimmed through most of it so being outside on a hot day definitely helped me get through most of this book.

A really wonderful premise boasting high fantasy, magic and dragons, and an interesting set up where lords and ladies of the realms undergo intense prep and training to snag a coveted spouse.

This story stars Jasen, who is definitely a fish out of water and because of his financial situation (made dire by his drunkard gambling father) he really has no choice but to offer himself up and see if any rich lord will take interest and want him for a husband. He never thinks to even consider he’s a prime catch, nor that he would come into magical abilities that call to the venerable dragons that everyone worships.

This aptly portrays Jasen’s personal and external conflicts as he’s totally unprepared for any sort of responsibility, let alone catching the eye of the widowered king himself. Peppered with some fun moments as Jasen’s being groomed and subjected to an inordinate amount of lessons, there were also some lovely scenes as King Rilvor courts him. Beware lots of jealousy, a spiteful rival, and a frustrating father that made me want to throw and break things. Also for a book with “dragons” in the title, they were sadly sorely lacking.

Regardless of my minor quibbles, many have enjoyed this, and it’s always a bonus when something is free. For those wanting perhaps a more fully realized story, the expanded version of 175 more pages is currently up for grabs on KU! Enjoy!

Fun, sweet, and feel-good. I would warn, however, there are a few instances of fatphobia that made me go :/, but apart from that the characters are very likable and the bit of world building is intriguing!

Good bones, fun court intrigue, good friendship, no stupid relationship nonsense. The writing was distractingly unpolished at times and there was nothing shockingly unpredictable but also it's not that kind of book. Was overall a sweet and enjoyable fluff read.
