I've changed my rating on goodreads at least three times and I can't figure out if I really loved it or not, and to what extent lol I can't really decipher my thoughts.

At first, I must say that I wasn't particularly enthralled by this book, I loved the introduction of Sam and Sadie’s relationship, the evolutive the things we learned about their family lives as we went along, their friendship with Marx etc. but I was rather indifferent to the last third, it wasn't bad but it wasn't much more. You know those movies where the producers extrapolate to make several volumes when two would have been enough, if you know what I mean, I felt it was pretty pointless and we were floundering. Although I don't think this book will stay with me for long and I probably won't come back to it, it's a story about friendship, quite realistic about what a true friendship can be, one that spans the years and characters that grow together! After that, I must admit I don't really see why this book was so highly acclaimed, as at times it really fell into clichés and the characters are quite detestable at times. However, I really appreciated all the references to tech and video game design as such, it was so interesting to see the creative process and I thought the technical elements were very well incorporated into the story and it's great to democratize this kind of niche subject in a work of fiction!

In the end, it didn't do it 100% for me, it was okay. I guess it’s the type of book you easily read in summer at the beach or something. I think it was hard for me to know whether I liked it and to be objective about this book because I'd heard so many good reviews, and I needed to step back to be critical.

It speaks to the skill of an author when you can captivate me with a topic I’ve never had interest in

I almost gave this four stars but it was so well written I added another.

It always feels a bit challenging to follow a story over the course of years or decades without losing out on imagery or intimacy with characters. But with this book I felt a constant sense of familiarity, even as the book jumped years in time within the course of a few pages. I appreciated this aspect and the extra energy devoted to maintaining a level of quiet closeness between reader and characters.

Beyond that, I also enjoyed the exploration of love within friendships. Not only was this a different kind of love than what we see in modern fiction, but it was also done so damn well. Personally, I don’t think I was ever rooting for a Sam and Sadie endgame, and I think that’s why I appreciated this book so much. To root for that or for the book to have ended up that way, in my opinion, would have tarnished what Zevin seemed to set out to do in the first place.

All in all, this book was a welcome breath of fresh air. It left me enthused but satisfied— and almost interested in video games.
