Wanted to like this book since everyone LOVED it but I did not. Thought it was going to be a solid DNF but came back many months later and begrudgingly finished it on audio. Sigh, just not that good. Oh well.

10/10  for content
7/10  for the story itself

I think that this is a book everyone should read. If even half of what was said or done in this book is actually happening in real life, we have a huge problem in publishing and the bookworld. I did find the story itself to be boring but I carried on reading because I thought that the FMC couldn't get worse. Spoiler: She did.

The FMC was written to be a tragic and blindly racist idiot, which is exactly what she came across as. Besides being racist, she truely is her own worst enemy. So desperate to find fame and so obsessed with Athena. I'll never understand how someone can be dumb enough to steal and still set themselves up to be exposed multiple times. If you're going to be stupid, at least be smart about it.

Was she seeing ghosts because she felt guilty? Because if she was worried about being found out, she certainly wouldn't have continuously given herself away!

Anyway, not the book of the year but definitely glad that I read it.

An incredible, gripping and immensely clever read - a hot take on the publishing industry and modern-day 'cancel culture'.  I could not put this book down. A meta-read, writing about writing, the creative process, pathological lying and a guilt-struck, questionaly unreliable narrator. Rocked my world!

I'm not sure if I would've finished this book if I had read it physically; the narrator is super unlikable, the plot was quite predictable to me, and the pacing was a bit slow sometimes. But I did finish it, and it was an alright experience overall. I liked the commentary about racism and the book industry, but I think it could have been more subtle.

A note on the translation: I was very put off sometimes by the decision to translate words to Dutch that we would normally use the English term for, and the inconsistency in which this was done. Sometimes terms were overly explained as well, and I'm not sure if this was the translator's choice, or the author's.

A note on the narrator: overall, I didn't mind this narrator, but she did pronounce the "tle" in "Chipotle" as in "Aristotle" and I can't get over that.

Yellowface is a wonderfully written work that delves into a lot of topics such as racism, loneliness, the struggles of the writing industry and mental health. It drags you into the story and keeps you there during the entire read.

[Possible spoiler below]

The ending, however, feels open ended. It leaves the reader to decide whether her life went to ruins or if she crawled back and continued writing as a successful author. And I, personally, enjoyed that. It felt very fitting with the narrative that we had been receiving thus far.

Went into this book without really knowing anything about it, and was surprised I thoroughly enjoyed it! I can imagine why people might not enjoy this book and its main character June; but what can I say? I loved to hate June Hayward. I just had to keep reading to see how deep she was gonna dig her own grave.

Didn't really love the ending, which is why I gave it four stars, not five. But it was still a read I really enjoyed, in a sort of guilty pleasure kinda way.
