The Marquess' Adventurous Miss is Ava Bond's debut novel and the first in her The Oxford Set series.

After an ill-fated affair with a married woman, Richard Cavendish (the Marquess of Heatherbroke) is desperate to find his daughter, Harriet. He cocks up this scheme to kidnap her but, in doing so, also kidnaps Prudence Pendleton.

Prudence Pendleton is the vicar's daughter and longs for adventure (thanks to the gothic novels that she loved to read.) When Harriet was placed under her family's care, Prudence took it upon herself to raise her. It is during one of their walks, that they are both kidnapped by a man claiming to be Harriet's father.

This was an enjoyable read. I liked Richard and Prudence. Richard took some getting used to in the beginning, but his distrust of Prudence is warranted considering what his so-called friends did to him. I loved how he softened up around her. Prudence was a great heroine. I loved how protective she was of Harriet and how she stood up to Richard and his accusations. The more time they spend together, Richard and Prudence both start to develop feelings for the other and, by the time they get to Richard's estate, Prudence is not sure whether she even wants to go back home!

This book is quite steamy. Prudence, as the vicar's daughter, is a virgin and knows nothing of how a child is conceived; which she ponders greatly after hearing about Richard's ill-timed affair with Harriet's mother. She questions Richard on the fundamentals, which leads to some steamy experimentation.

I think fans of steamy historical romances would enjoy this story. As mentioned above, I really enjoyed Prudence and Richard's story and am looking forward to where Ava takes this series next!

This was a new to me author and I’m torn on how I feel about this book. There were times that I enjoyed it but others thought it was a bit slow. Some plot points worked for me and others I struggled with overlooking. The story and plot was enjoyable but I didn’t connect with the characters or their romance. I was interested in it to finish it all the way through and am curious enough about the rest of Oxford Set to read the rest of this series. There are three open door encounters plus a fade to black.

I gather that this is the author’s debut novel, in the historical romance genre at least, and in my opinion never was the saying “a good beginning bodes well” more right than in this case. Ava Bond is really a very promising and talented writer! The landscape descriptions are astonishing without being boring or lengthy, the hero and the heroine are well characterized and their love is passionate, romantic and compelling. Richard has made a mistake, but he’s been paying for it every day of his life. While trying to find his lost daughter, he meets the woman who’s taking care of her, Prudence, and kidnaps them both! But Prudence, who is supposed to be a meek country girl, the daughter of a Vicar of a small village, hides an adventurous heart… Her character is really a treat: she’s sweet, brave, resourceful and endearing. But Richard is a match for her: he’s honorable, good and kind. For once (it doesn’t happen very often in historical romance!) both characters are very likeable from the very start.
Furthermore, this is the first book of a series and I think there’s a lot of potential here. I’ve already seen a couple of side characters whose stories might be enjoyable to read…
