In my mind, this is how mental illness should be studied by historians. Historians who spend their entire works trying to diagnose historical figures with modern illnesses are doing a disservice to historical peoples and to themselves. Understanding them on their own terms, and noting how these change over time, is really the only way to go. This is a wonderful, if short, book on the subject. It's definitely recommended.
