Now, I may be biased. I love Fagan's writing. But this little novel is quite frankly, and to fit with the writing style, a fucking masterpiece.

The Panopticon follows Anais and her story of living in the social care system. It made me smile warmly at her friendships with Tash, Shortie and the rest of the Panopticon gang and their times of... Just being kids. Or at least trying to be.

This book has hard times. There are dark topics, which bluntly, need to be covered because they are very real and very true for a lot of individuals who are care experienced. Well done Fagan; someone had to tell the stories that nobody wants to hear, and you did it in a way that left me astonished.

Feels a bit weird to say I "enjoyed" this, perhaps its more accurate to say that I was moved by it. The main character was compelling and the friendships were touching and hopeful in a very bittersweet way. I felt like I cared a lot about the characters and even though I predicted quite a few of the plot points I still felt the squeeze in my chest when they actually happened. Picked this book up randomly in the library without knowing anything about it and it was not at all what I expected from the blurb/title. Thought I would be reading a bit of a mystery/thriller but its really a snapshot of the despair and misery inflicted on children in care. Has left me feeling contemplative. We need to get a grip and change things.
