I went into this book expecting it to be so much more than it ended up being. I feel like something is missing from it. I just couldn't get into it, even though I finished it. I will definitely not be reading this again.
If you like stream of consciousness and books on the line of HBO's 'Euphoria' then you'd probably enjoy it. Mostly, though, it's just really sad.

Really loved this book, which delivers that genuine, careening teenage energy/experience — and then places it in a genuinely messed up world that has no interest in protecting anyone. It's a scary and stressful and emotional combination, especially because the book succeeds in making the world seem real and continuous in a way that most books aren't: it's hard to explain the feeling, but it's like... in this book, there is a strong sense that the world continues beyond the borders of the characters and the story — and not in some vague worldbuild-y way, but in as detailed and specific a way as the part of the world we're seeing. The contours of the story and the characters do not have clear edges; every element that is included doesn't feel like it was included at the deliberate convenience of the author, but simply because it was really there. And what happens to the characters feels the same way — unpredictable, uncertain, and really happening in a way that does not feel true in many books (even very good books.)
All or most of this is to the credit of the main character's voice — maybe it's because I've been reading too much genre fiction and semi-fictional-biography lately, but it has been awhile since I read a book with a real, in-your-face narrative voice, complete with initially-frustrating dialect transcriptions.
Full of aliveness.
