This is one of the more immersive books I’ve read. Baldwin truly has a talent with both the language and the narrative elements of this book being captivating.

James Baldwin is a heavy writer... I listened to this because I had a hard time reading it. The language is INTENSE.

4.5 stars. A heart-wrenching novel filled with claustrophobic character so afraid of yet desperate for vulnerability and the violence of the social barriers which ensnare them.

As with all James Baldwin books, there is deep character development and beautiful prose. It can feel tedious at times, but is so rewarding.

Baldwin takes the theming from his previous two novels and combines them with the lyrical prose of his previous novel to build a beautiful catastrophe of pain, heartbreak, and infidelity.
