WHAT A RIDE!!!! The John Cleave series was fantastic! I am so glad that I decided to pick up this series because it was such an unexpected joyride! Nothing Left To Lose was an amazing ride that tied up John's story quite nicely. The ending was like a perfect, actually too perfect close. I wanted more of a BANG but what I got was a bang. I liked how it was wrapped up everything and I think for John it was absolutely needed but after everything that he went through it just seemed to good to be true. That is probably my only qualm really for this book though. I like that we got a more in depth view on the Withered and how they tick. It really makes you think about life in a way. I mean is it really worth it to give up one emotion to live forever. I feel like we would all say yes possibly but our emotions are what make us human. I for one love who I am and I don't think I would be who I am today if I didn't have all my emotions. John Cleaver thank your entering my life and I am sad to see this series come to an end because it was riveting!!

I wouldn’t call that ending disappointing per se, but it was a little abrupt and left too many loose ends for my liking… Still, I had so much fun with this series, and I recommend it to all the fans of paranormal thriller/mystery, and intelligent, introspective MCs. John is without a doubt one of the most interesting characters I’ve had the pleasure to ‘meet.’

The last entry in this series. This entire book felt off, and not in a good way. There was no emotion and it felt very empty. John usually struggles with his impulses through the books and he just kinda sails by in this one...mentions a few times that he thinks about killing people, but we never see him actually struggle with his inner self. The ending is wrapped up neatly, maybe too neatly, but I guess it's a satisfactory, yet disappointing, ending to the series.

This book was good, this book was building up to something amazing...

Then the author created that ending.

Redemption and finding ones-self indeed. I don't know if I'm a fan of how things turned out for all the characters involved, but let me tell you that's why I knocked it down two stars.

Unfortunately, this was a disappointment. While it was a quick read that kept me engaged, it was missing many of the elements of John's personality that initially got me hooked on the series. In the earlier books it was fascinating to watch John struggle with his serial killer tendencies, but in this installment he was more or less an empty shell. I understand that characters evolve, but it's unfortunate that John evolved to be so.....boring.

A happy ending. That was unexpected. And...unsatisfying.

Some qualms:

-Why were all the Withered in America? Lol their number has been whittled down to 3, but John has only been hitchhiking in the US. If the Withered really wanted to survive...they could have just moved abroad.

-John's about face at the end. Oh, let's forgive the 10,000 year-old Withered woman who has murdered god knows how many people simply because she is a mother figure. And the fact that the FBI guy went along with it. I did like his and John's dynamic. Though, John did seem overly snarky in this book. Bordering on annoying.

-Is it believable that an 18 year old with no lockpicking experience was able to pick the lock on his handcuffs in the midst of a stressful situation? Without the FBI people (who were talking to him) noticing?

-Such a short book.

-that happy ending. John gets to live in a mortuary (returning to his roots), with a replacement mother, and then his FBI buddy covers for him and so the government isn't after him anymore. He has a potential girlfriend in that girl who also works at the mortuary. And the FBI guy even brings him his dog and his aunt and sister so he can have a reunion.
There was actually no downside to this happy ending, save for Brooke/Marcy. But since neither of them were in this book, it didn't feel like such a big downside.

Also, fuck, I would have taken the powers and immortality >___> Can't sympathize with characters who choose normalcy...

Not the best of the series (ugh that ending really left a bad taste in my mouth), but it was still good.
