More of a 3.5 ⭐... I struggled to keep focus on the book despite having a lot of interest in the setting

I worry this book is getting a rep for being long and dense and challenging to read, but I found it fairly easily digestible. Blurbed by Julia Phillips, so I came in with expectations high. I read a lovely but meandering interview with the author where she explained some of the stylistic choices w/r/t changing and shape shifting POVs, but I found that distracting in an otherwise excellent read. Honestly thought it could have carried on for a few more chapters.

Having no prior knowledge of the Sami culture and lifestyle (I googled lavvu, yoik, and repeatedly used the novel’s map of 19th century Scandinavia), this was a deeply engrossing and propelling read. Fascinating, wounded, characters that were also so tender and vulnerable. I loved it.
