I knew a lot about the story when I started reading the book due to the movie. I saw that when I was young, and was overwhelmed by the evil entity that invaded Regan. What I did not know or expect of the book was the poetry. The language used while narrating this horribly fascinating story was alive with beauty and depth. I suppose I expected something a bit more gutteral and base.

A classic horror book of course and very very good. Not my favorite in terms of style and some of it felt kind of pretentious but still a good read! PLEASE CHECK CONTENT WARNINGS BEFORE READING!

Religious as should be expected from a book with this title. Unsettling atmosphere right from the get-go, quickly turning into more when I regularly started visibly frowning at the pages and feeling sick to my stomach. It pulled me in and was a page-turner, I had a hard time putting it down once I started reading. Some things were quite unclear, but nevertheless I enjoyed the book.

Very similar to the movie, which isn't a bad thing. The antisemitism was ... gratuitous and unneeded. Other than that and a few other brief things I enjoyed this a lot.

Overall the story was good. I knew what was going to happen because I’ve seen the movie. However, the dialogue is very hard to read and there is almost no world building. Describing of actions? Sure. I could paste any “Hollywood home” into the story and it’d fit. I wish they had gone into more detail about how Regan and the demon became what they were. I get I’m to infer it’s from the ouija board but I’d would’ve liked those scenes, had they existed, more than scenes of Karras’s internal droning.

I think just about everyone has heard of the movie The Exorcist. I watched it several years back, and it messed me up for three days after. Since then I've been interested in checking out the book and seeing what the differences are.

Right off the bat I would have to say that this book is more about the people around Regan rather than Regan herself, which was really interesting to me. There even seemed to be a side plot going on in the beginning, but that is cast aside, and not really mentioned in the second half of the book.

If you are going into this for scares, then I'd steer you away. There was only one scene that creeped me out, and everthing else was more on the disturbing side. I thought the book would keep with the escalation of what was happening, but it turns out the climax of that is half way to 3/4 into the book.

There is one character that I really wish we had learned more about. He is in the prologue, but then is only in a few pages before the book ends. It surprised me, and made the ending feel really rushed. I remember I felt the same way about the ending in the movie, and that it seemed really sudden. I'm starting to be convinced that I just don't really like any ending of a book. Haha.

Overall I enjoyed the way the story was told, liked the larger cast of characters, and appreciated the more scientific approach to possession. Unfortunately, the scares I was looking for weren't there. It's still a great book though !
