Informative with beautiful, engaging illustrations that bring to life the history of the pride flag. This is not text heavy, so it makes a great story time read for kids with small attention spans. There is a more detailed section at the back of the book with a timeline and resources.

A straightforward and simple book about the origin of the gay pride flag.

Books like this for children tend to get me thinking about when did I read my first story about a princess needing a prince? Or watch a movie with a wedding in it? Or see two people kiss? Too young to remember. When did I know about the concept of assassination? Or learn about suffragettes or abolitionists? Stories featuring joy and romance, and difficult histories have been part of my life for so long now, that I do not remember a time before them. So the idea that this story full of hope and activism and joy, as well as tragedy and bad human behavior might be inappropriate seems quite absurd to me.

This was a wonderful, introductory history of the Pride flag and Harvey Milk’s part in its creation. I loved the way the author and illustrator saw the rainbow flag through to recent history. There are great biographical notes in the back to talk to readers about the history in a condensed fashion. I loved this book!
