Aaron Falk has gone home for his childhood best friend's funeral – something he would have avoided except for the cryptic note from the man's father. Aaron, now a federal agent, gets pulled into the investigation of the death of the man and his wife and son. This stirs up memories of a death from years ago. The one that made Aaron and his dad leave town.

No surprise to the killer, but good story just the same.

The ending of this book made me sad. I mean, it's about the murder of a bunch of people, so the premise is kinda sad anyway. But I like murder mysteries, so I was surprised at my melancholia. But I think it's because I liked these characters more than usual. I enjoyed getting to know them and I was sorry they weren't going to make it. So I guess that is actually high praise for a book.

Really good double mystery. Foreshadowing was not obvious so ending was a surprise.

Well, I didn't figure that one out and that's a good thing. Enjoyed enough to want to read book #2

A gripping atmospheric thriller that I rushed through in only a few sittings. Oddly enough, the pace sometimes should have seemed slow, but every scene was meaningful and keeps you hooked. The characters were vivid and felt like people you'd actually know from a small Australian town. Fantastic storytelling from Jane Harper, looking forward to the rest of Aaron Falk's investigations!

4.5-really well done mystery. The setting, farmlands of Australia, was refreshing and the author captured the small town mind set so well, the gossip and distrust. Surprised to find its a first novel. Will definitely read the second installment when it comes out in Feb.2018.
