I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this book. But I did! It was very interesting and I really enjoyed learning a bit more about India and life there.

Well crafted book about a young Indian girl left a widow at 13. Gives insight into the traditions and superstitions that prevent women escape their so called destiny. A little in the tone of the works of Deborah Ellis & my same critique- why does it take a white North American woman to tell these tales? While I'm sure they have the best intentions and undoubtedly write very well, why are these women not telling their own stories- and if they did would they find an audience?

I had to read this book in school in 6th grade. I thought it was a good book and an interesting story. The whole school thing and reading it against my will kind of put a dampener on it. I liked it though.

genre: realistic
summary: Koly is old enough for a arranged marriage. With little money, it is hard to scrape together a dowry and a proper suitor. When Koly's parents receive and offer for they agree never knowing that the match is a scam to get money to pay for their young son's medical expenses. Koly is forced to marry a young boy who is dying. When, he dies she must remain with his cruel parents. Eventually, Koly's mother-in-law abandons her in a strange city (a notorious place for abandoning widows). How will Koly survive?
notes: while there is mention of arranged marriage there is no mention of sex
for kids who like: stories about other cultures, realistic fiction
age group: age 11+
my review: super interesting but depressing. we forget that there are parts of the world where women have very little rights.

This is a quick and compelling read about a young girl who is widowed after an arranged marriage in India. I loved her struggle to find a place in the world.

Pretty cute and all, but it didn’t really provoke much thought. I enjoyed the book and it was fun to read, but I was never really thinking about it outside of me reading it.

This book is the very book that sparked my love for reading. I still remember reading this beautiful novel in my bunk bed, hoping my sisters across the room wouldn't get me in trouble for keeping my lamp on.
The characters are rich with history, personality, personal fears, and human nature that broke my heart and returned my hope. An interesting plot following a relatable young woman through the many struggles of betrayal, fear, trust, learning to love again.
