Sometimes you want to sink into a book where you know what to expect and for me, Nora Roberts romantic suspense stand-alone novels fall in that category. I don’t know the details but I know the overall feelings to expect and I’m here for it.

In Legacy, we have Adrian who has a fitness business - starting with her first workout videos while she was still in high school. And ever since those first videos she’s been getting threatening letters once a year in the form of poems.

After her grandmother’s death, she moves in with her grandfather and reconnects with friends in their town - including Raylan, her childhood best friend’s older brother. As Adrian settles into her new life, the letters start to come more frequently - perhaps this threat is more than she originally thought.

I didn’t always like Adrian - there are parts of her character that I found really annoying. But that also made her more real to me - she’s not a perfect person but who is? I liked seeing the ways she grew and changed through the book with her family and found family and Raylan.

Thank you to St Martin’s Press and Netgalley for the advance reading copy. I also got the audiobook from the library and highly recommend - the narration was great and kept me riveted to see what would happen next.

Similar to a lot of Nora Roberts recent stand alone novels, this is probably more of a mystery novel than a typical romance novel. In this particular case, I found that perhaps too much time was spent giving the back story of the individual characters and not enough time on their actual romance. Adrian and Raylan’s relationship felt a little rushed with not enough details for me. However, still a good story.

I liked this book because I always like Nora Roberta but I must admit it felt more predictable than usual, the dovetailing of junk food and super healthy regimens didn’t really work for me, I did not love our super flexible and super pushy heroine, there are many characters but so little information about them that they were hard to track, and finally that the stupid/diabolic, uneducated/super-skilled, family obsessed/ lone wolf villain was implausible in almost all respects. One star off.

This was not my favorite Nora Roberts book. I found the main character annoying at times and weirdly pushy at times. I knew who it was super early on.
Super happy the dog doesn't die. Bumped my rating a little just for that.

Someone get my grandma on the phone - she was right all along about Nora Roberts!!
.
Seriously, my grandma owns probably every Nora Roberts book ever written no joke so I decided to rent this as an audiobook off of Libby and wow - the hype is deserved. I was such a fan of the writing style in this book.

*multiple character POVs
*decades worth of timeline covered with great pacing
*lovely setting(s)i'm moving to maryland
*heartbreaking tragedies
*overarching murder mystery
*wonderful side characters

I really enjoyed Adrian as the main character - I kind of want to be her when I grow up. I also thought the people in her life were amazing to read about and I would happy read another book from one of their POVs.

Now, omw to raid my grandma's bookcase

Firstly, I'd like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for providing an eARC of Legacy for an honest review.

Straightaway with that first line I was hooked: 'the first time Adrian met her father was the day he tried to kill her'. Hook, line and sinker. We got to see the main character, Adrian, grow from a 7 year old into her thirties and for me it didn't seem strange to keep jumping forward in time because we were given the main events that mattered and it made sure we knew exactly what was going on in her life.

It is a multiple POV book that is a romance thriller, which Nora Roberts does so well. Adrian is being stalked by an unknown poet from the time she becomes a well known fitness instructor. Every single year she receives a poem that are all equally threatening. We get the POV from the murderer and it is so chilling the way Roberts creates her stories. As well as this we have a beautiful family that mean so much to Adrian. Her grandparents are brilliant characters. Adrian's friends that she acquires over the years and their children are the best. There are so many brilliant themes in this book that you just need to read it to see it.

Then there is the romance between Adrian and Raylan. With Jasper and Sadie (their dogs) is so lovely and heartwarming. They finally came together after so many years of knowing each other. Roberts always gives her characters such interesting careers and I loved watching Adrian's blossom creating fitness videos and Raylan with his graphic novels.

Definitely recommending this to anyone and everyone! It's a brilliant book that you need to read!

This is pretty much an archetypal Nora Roberts suspense. Cute small town, families of multiple designs, violence and murder, charming romance.

Content note: heroine is a fitness guru and there are casual references to "health" being gauged by food and an assumption that health axiomatically equals fit and trim.
