Amazingly written, delving into mother-daughter relationships and the mistakes and sacrifices that mothers make, both to help themselves and their daughters. Throughout the novel we see different paths to motherhood arise, both reluctant and enthusiastic, which cause us to question what motherhood truly is. Along the way Celeste Ng's novel lends itself to greater discussions about classism, racism, reproductive justice, and the concept of planned communities.

This book is character driven with a lot of long back stories and convoluted suburban drama. I think I would’ve liked it more if there had been more suspense, but I knew what was going to happen before it happened, which made the story a bit boring. I appreciated the themes of maternal love, plans vs passions, and race relations. But the book felt more like telling instead of showing, which wasn’t as engaging as it could have been.
Content: a few concerns to be aware of, but none explicit or graphic.

I read this for my English class and thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The story is complex and at times difficult to follow, but overall this is a good story to get you thinking. I love seeing the different points of view and getting caught up in the drama of it is exilerating.
The book doesn't have a happy ending it is merely a content ending. With Mrs. Richardson finally understanding that her perfect bubble has popped, leaving Izzy out on her own.
