Sorry, I cannot form words right now...let alone a whole review. I'll write one soon. Right now I just want to curl up with the book in my chest and never let it go.

Well, this just gave me absolutely everything I wanted in a sequel, and SO much more. Messy, confusing relationships? Check. Bree wrestling with her power and the responsibility she feels to the Order and her ancestors? Check. A billion new big bad threats, all more surprising and complicated than the last? Um, hell yeah.

I love the whole world Deonn has built here; filled with legend and magic but grounded in real issues and as diverse as they come, it's an absolute joy to get lost in Bree's story. To the extent that I eked out the end for days because I didn't want it to end. This is a series that's ripe for reading over and over and over.

Oh, and lots more Selwyn please, thank you.

I’m not sure if this will be my final rating but I didn’t love this as much as book 1. The pacing felt a little off with it being slower and drawn out in moments and rushed in others. I enjoyed the expansion of the world and Bree’s exploration of root magic as well as ancestor work but not sure I love where it’s going by the end. I also found some of her behavior to be a bit inconsistent and frustrating. Bree also almost dies a lot and it’s followed by a few days of her being blacked out and then on to the next, which feels like the stakes aren’t as high. I do appreciate the handling of the love triangle and how it is not the main focus. I’m still looking forward to the finale of this series!

Bree really went into this book still dealing with grief in so many different forms. It was refreshing to see book two not disregard that and in fact build on that and the struggle of ancestral trauma and becoming her own character and not what other people expect or want from her. Yes there is a subplot of romance but this story isn’t about the love triangle between white boys, it’s about Bree. Forever team Bree and here for whatever she decides to do in book 3.
