"The emotional qualities are antagonistic to clear reasoning."
Funnily enough, this is the one story where I feel like Sherlock is exceptionally more human than some of the others I read. Makes the quote that much more interesting. Sherlock is wonderfully flawed in this one.
The mystery was unpredictable, always good. I have to say, I was rather distracted from the main plot when I realised who Mary was (going to be) to John and was hyperfocused in reading things about them. Quite an adorable origin-story they have.
In short, entertaining. Not masterful like some of the others but a good story.

This is my second favorite Sherlock Holmes story (behind A Study In Scarlet, of course). It's very beautifully written and also heartbreaking if you know where to look. The following quote always gets me.
The division seems rather unfair," I remarked. "You have done all the work in this business. I get a wife out of it, Jones gets the credit, pray what remains for you?"
"For me," said Sherlock Holmes, "there still remains the cocaine-bottle." And he stretched his long white hand up for it.”

Well, it was better than A Study in Scarlet... Pretty darn racist, but still better... 3.5 stars.
