This book sat on my shelf dusting away for more than a year since I’ve read the first few chapters. I was afraid to pick it up and read the pain of a child who just wants to spend more time with her father. After a series that occur as a consequence of her wanting to see her father, she is married off to a man so much older than her at just the age of fifteen.
My dearest Mariam, if I could hold you, I would. I would give you all the love you want and need. I’m so sorry you had to go through all the pain that made you build a wall so high you were afraid someone could steal the only thing you had - misery in the arms of a man who treated you like you were not human or animal. I’m sorry because this is still the reality of so many women 24 years into 21st century.

When I resumed reading this book, I did not know I would be introduced to Laila. I have a habit of forgetting what’s written in the back of a book. A book’s short summary. You took me by surprise. Your love story made me feel butterflies in my stomach. Your father earned my respect. Your poor mother, my sympathy. Your brothers, my adoration. My beautiful Laila, you showed me how hope, desire and purpose take forms. Your strength to continue to live in a world unknown gave me strength. Your Tariq taught me how strong love can be. Together you both taught me the strength in togetherness. Your sisterhood with Mariam made me appreciate my friendships with my girlfriends more than I already did. That’s a partnership I never wish to take lightly.

Khaled Hosseini, no praise is big enough to convey the respect all of us have for you. I’ve lived through so many lives in books. I’m a new person every time I’m reading one or have read one. This book has a profound impact. To convey the emotions of women in words is not easy but you have done it so well. I don’t regret waiting a year to read this. I wouldn’t have been able to handle all those tears then. Thank you for writing this story.

Deeply dark and depressing as can be expected of a book largely about war.

I read this book when I was a teenager so this is a reread, but it will always be 5 stars.

Overall, this book was very depressing. The hard to read scenes are well written- however, when it comes to the aftermath of these events it feels like the author is in a rush to get on to the next thing, this causes the emotional impact of events to dampen for me.  The further on into the book you get the more the rushing happens, the author rushes character relationships to the point where it feels like you missed out on all the development there. Also, the reaction of characters to events that have happened (or to being told news) is skipped over- it would’ve made the book a lot better if the author had slowed down a bit when it came to these things.
The book started off really strong, but towards the end I felt like the quality declined. The ending for me was really underwhelming as it felt certain things weren’t acknowledged ‘on screen’ when they perhaps should have been.
the welcoming back of tariq felt really underwhelming and rushed and the account of their lives together after felt rushed through and as a result the events weren’t as emotional as they could’ve been if the author had taken his time

I can’t speak as to how historically accurate this book is.
