I picked this up because my daughter is reading it in school. I thought it a well told Children’s version and introduction to these classics.

I read this long before reading The Odyssey. The story was told and it was slightly easier to understand, but I didn’t like it. I read this in 7th or 8th grade for some “gifted” class I had to take, and I remember hating the entire book.

Audible: Excellent narration; a great reread of an old favorite as a point of sharing & discussion w/the grands in prep for lit class.

I downloaded the a free audio version and listened to it with my children at bedtime. I had never read the original Homer but I knew of the tale. It was nice to hear the adventures and tales in accessible language.

Good, but some of the language was a little hard to understand. For example, "She spoke to him as a princess should, seeing that in spite of the evil plight he was in, he was a man of worth. 'Stranger,' she said, 'Since though hast come to our land, thou shalt not lack for raiment nor aught else that is given to a suppliant. I will show thee the way to the town also.'"

I was kind of skeptical that my memory of enjoying this as a child was accurate, but it ended up being extremely engaging, for any age I think. Love the non-linear storytelling. Those Greeks sure know how to spin a tale. Or 2. Or 500 in one.

Err, the books I'm reading and have lined up are solid non-fiction, and this was the only exception? Maybe someday I'll read the adult's homer, but first I'm going to revisit the copy I read when I was eight. It was originally published in 1918 by an Irish poet and has sweet line drawings.
