I feel confident in saying that this book will be one of my top reads of the year. I ran across it in the library app I use, and it looked interesting, and only heard about how hyped up it was after I finished reading it.
I did not anticipate how this story would make me feel. Yeah, I cried. Mr. Baker’s development was lovely, and the connections he formed with the inhabitants of the island are heartwarming and beautiful to witness.
I loved the queer storyline told so wonderfully naturally. It wasn’t to make a point, it was just two queer characters falling in love like normal people. (Because that’s how it actually happens.) Their queerness wasn’t the central piece of their character.
If any of my friends ask for book recommendations, this will be my immediate offering.

I wanted to reread this one before I start the sequel so I chose to listen to the audiobook this time. Loved the narration! Great voices that match what I had in my head while reading the physical copy.

I can't decide whether this is a middle-grade book or just an adult book with simple themes and plot. It is a "cozy" or light book in the sense that nothing truly bad winds up happening, but there are actual stakes which would seem to be far more serious. I think "whimsical" is a good word for it, and I did find the reading (listening) experience enjoyable. I liked the characters and the easy fantasy setting, even though their arcs were entirely predictable.
I'll probably check the newest book out at the library, but so far it isn't a series that I'll be thinking about long-term.
