DNF. I never realized historical fiction could be this boring. There is supposed to be a mystery hiding somewhere in this novel but it drowns in too long descriptions full of unnecessary details about land ownership, deeds and hereditary laws, as well as too many characters and mentions of nobles and their various roles, that have no real connection to the story. Even though the novel is narrated first person by a widow who may have a harrowing and emotional story to tell, she tells it slowly and blandly, with no emotion, giving the reader no way to empathize or care about what happened to her and her family. No, thank you.
