I started to read this manga due to some scans I saw and it looked really interesting, so I didn't realize the main character is only twelve years old until I was halfway through the manga. And then I literally yelled: „What the hell is wrong with you, mangaka?“
I have no problem with relationships between two characters who differ in age, not even if one of them is underage, depending on the maturity of the teenager and as long as it's not too sexual. But twelve? In my opinion, Ritsuka is mature enough to make a fine sixteen year old boy, which would make the kissing a little bit less creepy. But having a twelve year old who acts like sixteen is still better than having a sixteen year old who acts like twelve...
I actually enjoy reading this manga, I'm through the first three volumes so far, but it does have a certain aspects that make it look... questionable on the surface.

Emo main character with family issues? Check.
Moe and Bishounen? Check.
In the world of Loveless, kids are born with ears and tails (because having a 12-year-old main character isn't cute and innocent enough), which they lose together with their virginity. Which can be funny... but who wouldn't want to live in that world, because then people have just another reason to make fun of you and call you names. Talking about people... I haven't found a character so far who's older than, say, thirty and all the guys look like girls. Made me wonder if girls in these world were born with full-developed breasts, because... no. Just look at Yuiko. Look at her bosom. And remember that she's just twelve.
Atomic boobs? Check.
Slight BDSM kink (Chains and whips)? Check.
Masochism and blood? Check.

Not that I mind the kink in general, it's just weird in combination with the cutesy kids running around. O___O
What I liked was that the author tried to break with the uke/seme cliche by turning both main characters into masochists and declaring the „fighter“ as the slave of the „sacrifice“ - is anyone else reminded of Kuroshitsuji? Yeah. Thought so. Except Kuroshitsuji is way more awesome, has a better plot and Ciel and Sebastian are, in a way, equals.

Damn. If Soubi wasn't so smoking hot, I would not even have considered reading the second volume. What's wrong with me?

This book is amazing. Yes it is rated yaoi by most fans and romance is listed on the genre but when you read it you will notice little to no yaoi at all. I love the main characters, Ritsuka is a boy who has had a hard past and is still struggling. Soubi is a knight in shinning armour but not in a way Ritsuka would expect. Even though there is no yaoi, after this book you will be saying to yourself, "where's my yaoi". I personally felt like I was cheated out of it, I wanted more yaoi. It's an amazing book. Definitely worth reading

I don't know why so many manga-readers are fan of this series. For me it's okay but not great, there are some pros and cons. A major con is the age difference... it just feels weird.

I actually have the 2-in-1 omnibus, but I'm reviewing the two volumes separately since there was a pretty big jump in art quality from vol. 1 to vol. 2.

The first volume is confusing as hell. I want you to look at this page:

The light-haired kid at the top is the exact same character as the dark-haired kid at the bottom. And the first panel, despite the texture which screams "I am a memory", is actually happening in real time and it's not a memory at all. I spent most of the first volume playing, "Can you recognize the main character?" and, later, "Can you tell what the hell his personality is?"

By the second volume I either got used enough to this that it didn't matter anymore, or it stopped happening as much.

Aside from that, as far as the plot is concerned: it looks interesting, but it's very mysterious and all over the place. Also, it looks very light-hearted and fun, but it hints at a whoooole lot of darkness underneath and many cans of worms waiting to be opened. It's disturbing in its way - and I think that's exactly what it was aiming for.

This is a controversial series but I loved it. I love forbidden and dark romance - and as a teen this was perfect entry into that area and led me to read other more questionable BL series. This was shounen ai and was not truly explicit. It is one of those series that will stay with me forever.
