I’m not quite sure why I got this book early, but it’s given me one of my best Saturday afternoons in a long while. I didn’t think it was possible for me to live Keera more, but I do. I love how she’s grown and how her story handles healing from trauma. I also love her found family, and I can’t wait to see them continue their fight. I also didn’t think it was possible for this series to make me tear up again, but it did. My only regret is that I don’t have the next book to read.

I really enjoyed A Broken Blade, and was happy to find that A Shadow Crown improved on almost all aspects. I'd say it's slower paced with less action but there is a lot of focus on Keera and his history and healing journey and because of that, it grows apart from being overly tropey like the first book was but it does suffer from being slow since there's a lot of relationship building. This series warms my heart and the found family is one of the best I've read in this genre. While still not super unique, there's enough differences from other books in the genre that I still find it wholly entertaining and captivating.

Just as amazing as the first. Keera really shines in this book. She sets out to save her people and prove her sacrifices were not made in vain. I don’t know if she would agree if they are worth it, but she is able to get a grip on them more so. Her relationship and trust with Riven blossoms as they support each other and learn about their special bond.

Ultimately this book was about two things: 1) increased world building and 2) Keera, her personal growth, and learning more about her heritage. Though Keera grew as a character, it was at the expense of a) other characters’ and their growth, and b) the plot. For example, Riven seemed SO two dimensional in this book compared to the prior one. I will read future books to see what happens to Keera, Gerarda, and Gwyn, but this book was unfortunately forgettable.
