I was not expecting there to be as much gore and horror like scenes in this book as there were and they definitely took me by surprise. I liked the interplay between Sara and Jeffrey but I didn't particularly warm to any of the other characters, especially Lena who I found quite one dimensional. Reading this on 2024 you can feel the age of this book with references made to the town's views on African Americans and gay people. I found the connection between the killer and Sara to be a loose one and it didn't feel very convincing, but I didn't see it coning at least!

All hail the Karin Slaughter supremacy 🙌🏼

Such a great novel! Sara, Jeffrey, and Lena are all such fantastically real characters with flaws and quirks aplenty. Took me a bit longer to finish this book as I felt a bit “booked-out,” and -1 for guessing who the perp was well before halfway, but this was a thoroughly enjoyable crime thriller, and I’m excited to see what situations Sara finds herself in next book!

I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series! Her writing just absolutely sucks you in despite the disturbing scenes throughout. What a great story combo of romance, thriller, mystery and horror. Really enjoyed it!

Yeah, this book got straight to the point and fast. There is a ton of doctor lingo, but the descriptions of autopsies, horrible SA, and a suicide are not left to the imagination. Slaughter is very detailed and almost clinical in her descriptions of depravity. Thank God she cuts away at time for some of the more gruesome pieces but if a character is found dead, you'll know exactly what happened to them.

I’m rounding up a star for the narration! I like her current narrator but this one put me inside the book! This is not my first Karin  Slaughter book and I figured I should read the books in order now. This book is extremely graphic and I definitely felt uncomfortable listening to the details but overall it was a quick thriller. I guessed the ending but that’s not a deal breaker for me in the slightest.
