Vibrant illustrations accompany a simple poem that celebrates the diverse cultures of America. This would be great for a young classroom/storytime.

Very basic intro into the different cultures living in the US. I wish the title did not say "America" since that covers a lot more territory than the United States and is quite a sticking point with other countries in North America.
I also wish the nationalities represented on each page were explained and even some explanation of their costume and belongings as drawn. I think it would help a lot more in explaining different cultures to sheltered children who may not meet someone wearing different clothes than they do.

A great picture book that shows the diversity of immigrants that came to the United States. A great read aloud for elementary children.

I love picture books because they can take complex ideas and share them in gorgeously illustrated pages and simpler terms.
With this book, Ringgold offers up a fantastic book that reminds us that most of us are the children of immigrants!

Love the concept, but wish the text had rhymed all the way through because the unevenness was distracting.

This poem, with its refrain "We came to America,/Every color, race, and religion,/From every country in the world," underscores that being an American has nothing to do with the color of a person's skin or their country of birth. Bold, graphic, folky illustrations demonstrate how "We are ALL Americans,/Just the same."
While this is great for introducing this idea to very young readers, older picturebook enthusiasts would probably enjoy something a little meatier (and likely won't request this quick read at bedtime).

Stunning bold illustrations with patterns that connect them and deep saturated colors, a good message.

Great display of diversity through simple verse and illustration, from the Native American's who were here before, displaying all the reasons why immigrants have made America great. A picture book I must own!
