it’s genuinely a shame i didn’t like this considering how much i enjoyed delilah green

it just read as very unnatural at times, i kept catching myself saying “nobody talks like that” or “that wouldn’t happen”. it’s such a throwaway line in the book but there’s one quote about how simon (a man in his 30s) was bullied for coming out as bi in high school (presumably in the late 00s) but that the bullying stopped when the quarterback came out as pan a week later. that line could’ve been thrown out. that wouldn’t have happened.

maybe it’s on me for seeking realism in my silly romance book but i don’t think the sweetening of reality does it for me yk. nobody talks like that and it bugged me the whole time i was reading

also why are there Zero Butches in this world. all of your characters are queer and not One Butch?? points away for lack of butches truly every book could use more butches there’s no reason at all that jordan couldn’t have been a butch (and no a butch isn’t just Woman In Suit) but unfortunately. 0 butches.

and don’t even get me started on “women and nonbinary people”. over and over and over. i am a transmasc nonbinary lesbian this just loops back around to Nobody Talks Like That. how do you know by looking at a tarot deck that it’s filled with women and nonbinary people. nonbinary people can also be amab. what do nonbinary people look like. quickly.

I really enjoyed this one although not quite as much as Delilah Green. I really liked Astrid's character - seeing the uptight starchy character come apart is a favorite trope of mine. Although I think if someone read this book without reading Book 1, her character growth wouldn't be as interesting. To me, the end lost some steam - both characters were dreading confrontations (Jordan with Meredith and Astrid with her mother) and both of those confrontations seemed anti-climatic. I think I expected a bit more angst, especially with Meredith, who Jordan refuses to even think about for most of the book.

Dnf'd it. I didn't care for Astrid much, but the pleasure Jordan took in undermining and needling her was a bummer; I didn't find it to be sexy or romantic.

Maybe it was because I read this on the heels of a literary science fiction trilogy, but I found this book just okay. The characters were familiar, but the references to the first book boarded on over-explanation.
Also, no spice until 2/3rds of the way through was disappointing. There wasn’t enough build-up to make it a slow burn.
Overall, I liked the first book better.

And now I’m crying .

Wow, just wow . If possible I loved this book even more than “Delilah Green doesn’t care “. I loved absolutely everything about this story. They truly made me feel like love is possible. No matter how lost you may feel at the time no matter how much you feel like you don’t deserve it. Your soulmate is out there and it may not always be orderly or neat and it may be messy but it’s gonna be something so beautiful.

Loved the other books but couldn’t get invested in this one - in a bit of a slump!
