Jonathan Eig has done such a good job not only researching Martin's Luther King's life but also the people in it. He made Martin into this relatable and more human like character which is always so nice to see of someone who was a historical figure. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator (Dion Graham) could not be more perfect. Well-spoken and full of so much emotion and so good at giving each character their own voice. The interview at the end was so informative. Knowing how Eig felt while he was writing the book and all the work that went into it. I hope he writes more to this once the new records are released because I will be waiting for it. I plan to pick up another book by Eig soon!

This is 500+ pages of the real, human MLK…not the saint-like, sanitized, non-controversial figure he’s become in popular culture.
But MLK as he actually was: someone who was chronically late, extremely sexist, slightly homophobic, and who suffered from intermittent bouts of anxiety and depression.
Another way of saying it is that this biography was focused as much on the defeats as on the triumphs; as much on MLK as a sinner as on him as a saint.
If yr looking for hagiography then this is not yr book. But if you want a nuanced account of one of the 20th century’s great American heroes then you must read this ASAP.
