The conclusion to the original 4 novels of the X-Wing series was as epic a conclusion as one could expect and sets up for the adventures that would follow some of the characters we love. After finishing this series I believe the X-Wing books represent some of the best content that the Legends continuity has to offer and Alexander Freed's Alphabet Squadron novels build themselves on the foundation this series laid for it.

The conclusion here almost makes me want to revisit I, Jedi....almost.

(Minor spoilers.) A fun book, with more focus on space combat that I enjoyed. Still it felt like Rogue Squadron took unrealistically light losses. I think the final battle would have more impact and sense of danger with more significant character deaths. A nitpick I have with this book is its discussion of distance. Corran and Isard exchange several lines of dialog before her shuttle can travel 1 km to where it can go to hyperspace. Even real-word jet airplanes can fly 1 km in a few seconds, and real space craft can travel that far in just a fraction of a second. There are other similar issues, but this one was the most glaring. Obviously I don’t expect Star Wars to be hard SF, but that struck me as silly.

And so concludes this series concerning Rogue Squadron. This one wraps up the events from the previous books and details the end of the bacta war which came about because of the infection of Coruscant when the empire left it. Overall pretty good. This is the first time that I read the series although i tried starting it a couple of times since it came out in 1996. I have all the paperbacks that I bought when they first came out and I am glad I finally got around to reading them.

Rereading this book two decades after buying it took just a little of the shine off. The cast of characters is great, and I love the plot. But I recognize that the dialogue is a little heavy handed, and the internal monologues are far more verbose than the ones in my head.

⭐️: 4.75/5

“ ‘I hadn’t realized how much you had become part of my life until you were gone…’ “

➡️ linear timeline
👥POV: multiple first person
🐎 Pace: medium

💭: Wedge Antilles, Coran Horn, and Verru are some of the many characters we follow in the 4th installment of the X-wing series.

What I loved:
  • TATOOINE! 🏜️
  • They’re basically pirates now 🏴‍☠️
  • Cantina scene
  • Booster, Mirax’s dad
  • The black-claws!! FUCK YEAHHH
  • Iella, becoming a MF boss while moving through her grief
  • Spaceship lore (actually sounds cool)
  • Ooryl, his storyline in this book made me so happy 🥹
  • Coran and Mirax 🥰
  • Epic ending!

What I wasn’t a fan of
  • Slow to start
  • Not sure where the series goes from here?

Overall, I absolutely enjoyed this book! With how things ended I’m not sure where everything will move forward from here but still looking forward to the next installment in the series since there’s a few unanswered questions lingering
